Finishing 'Your Project' Table
Retro modern unfinished tables in exciting designs and styles that will transform
your living space. You don't have to have commercial finishing equipment to
create your own masterpiece, and in fact it can be done indoors.
The following tips and techniques will help you achieve a professional finish to
'Your Project' table. Follow manufacturers directions and cautions on the labels.
Be sure to allow for proper ventilation of fumes and protect against spillage and
over-spray. That stuff can take the fun out of the project.
Water based primers, paints, stains and topcoats are ideal for finishing your table
project indoors, but there are still a few precautions... read the label.
Your Project, finished Your Way... It's FUN and Rewarding.
Retro Twist 'Your Project' Table Kits utilize a " T " shaped edge
moulding for ease of installation. Your table edge will have a
channel for the moulding. Allow 24 hours for the final topcoat to
dry, remove masking tape from the channel, and your ready to
install the edge trim. Do not remove the protective clear tape
on the chrome inlay moulding until fully installed to protect
the chrome finish on the moulding.
Start at a spot that will be the least noticed as the table is
sitting, such as an inside curve or side of table. This is where
the trim joint seam will be. Lightly tap the moulding or edgeband
into the channel on table edge with a rubber mallet or hammer.
Use the handle of the hammer to tap into tight inside curves.
On inside curves, make a relief cut into the part of the moulding
that goes into the channel with a small knife. This allows the
moulding to fit tightly. On outside curves, make a relief cut in
the shape of a 'V' into the part of the moulding that goes into
the channel. Be careful not to cut outside edge of moulding.
After installing trim all around the table edge, cut moulding at
a point 1/4" longer than the moulding starting point. Push end
of moulding into channel and then tap moulding into channel
to remove the 'hump'.
Remove the protective clear tape from the chrome inlay
moulding.

Decoupage Treatment
Protective Topcoat
Materials: Edge Moulding, Small Knife, Mallet or Hammer
Materials: Clear Enamel or Water based Topcoat and Foam Brush
Materials: Paper, Mod Podge, Water based Finish, Foam Brushes
Materials: Primer, Paint, Masking Tape
Varieties of paper stock from a craft store, magazine pictures,
maps, newspapers and books are all your sources. Loosely layout
your design on the table surface. Plan to go over the table edge, or
to protect table edge channel with masking tape if necessary. A
different look is achieved by tearing the paper vs. cutting with
scissors. Apply Mod Podge to table surface and position paper. You
will be able to re-position this piece for several minutes only, so
move quick.
Apply more Mod Podge to the area to smooth over. The Mod Podge
will clean off your hands with soap and water, so get on in there.
Wait 24 hours for Mod Podge to dry and cure, and your ready to top
coat. Apply water based poly finish with a foam brush following
directions on can label. Be careful not to over-brush, the product
does dry clear, and you can minimize brush marks.
CAUTION: We don't recommend spray topcoats (containing solvent)
unless you want the special effect of color "bleeding".
Always follow manufacturers directions and cautions on the label.
Finishing your table indoors requires water-based primers and
paints such as acrylic or latex. Brush on or spray, whatever you are
most comfortable with.
Choose a primer color as close to, but lighter than, the paint color
you have chosen. The end grain of the wood will absorb the most
primer. Spray or brush first, allow to dry, and lightly sand before
applying a second coat to the wood edge. The wood surfaces will
take the primer fast and easy, so conquer the edges first.
Your primer coat assures the wood is sealed and surfaces smooth.
Apply paint to directions on product. Protect surrounding areas from
overspray and use masking tape to keep edge trim channel open.
Stencils can be handmade and used for special effects.
Follow manufacturers directions and cautions on the label.
Allow paint to fully dry 24 hours. Several light coats are better
than one heavy coat. Use clear enamel topcoats over enamel
paints and water based sealers over acrylic, latex and water
based paints.
Table Leg Installation
Lay table topside down onto carpet or protected surface.
Install leg brackets into pre-drilled holes using screws provided.
Round tapered leg brackets angle towards outside edge of table.
Hairpin style and 3 bar metal legs don't require a bracket, and
will screw into pre-drilled holes. Be careful not to over-tighten.
Materials: Phillips Screwdriver
