Modeled after furniture made in colonial, pre-revolutionary
America. Turned spindles, frames, and bent wood. Not
much ornamentation. Generally stained light to medium.
Heavy and solid, made mostly from hardwoods such as
cherry, maple, walnut and oak.
Early European design characterized by hand carved
patterns, elaborate bronze, metal, shell or ivory inlays.
Very ornate, like the "claw feet".  Originally made from
beech wood for the natural exotic grain patterns. Mostly
found in medium to dark stain colors.
In the far east, Chinese and Japanese designs inspired
by  Asian characters and symbols. South Asian, such as
from India and Burma feature less ornamentation but
feature elaborate carvings. Curved lines and features.
made possible with the use of teak, bamboo, rattan and
other soft wood products. Most will be dark or painted.
This furniture style must be admired for its simplicity and
functionality. Creative methods of 'joinery', such as pegs
instead of screws or nails. Designs reflect  the most
efficient use of materials, mostly fruit woods. Often
tapered square or simple turned legs.
Constructed for utility with minimum or no finish for a
very natural look. Features wood with all of the natural
contours. Mostly made from the logs, sticks and twigs of
pine, cedar, fir or spruce.
Straight lines, thick and sturdy construction. Hardware
such as hinges usually visible on the outside. Extremely
plain and heavy. Made mostly of darker stained or
painted oak.
Simple shapes and lines, and virtually no ornamentation.
This style introduced economical man-made materials
such as plywood and medium density fiberboard (MDF).
Newer styles feature the extensive use of plastics and
glass.
Mid-Century
Modern, Retro
Creative design with a mixed use of materials. Natural
shapes formed as functional furnishings. Laminates and
color finishes brighten the look.
Contemporary,
Modern
A return to simple, yet imaginative forms, often with a
mixed use of materials such as wood, metal, glass, and
plastics.
Characteristics include little or no ornamentation or
visible hardware.
